An evening of two halves – three classic and influential silent films from the 1920s, with newly composed scores by Jean Hasse and Luke Styles, set the scene for the extraordinary story of Josephine Baker (1906-1975).
The evening will capture the spirit of 1920s’ Paris and the world of this African-American cabaret artist, who was also a civil rights activist and “the most sensational woman anyone ever saw” (Hemingway). Joséphine Baker is played by Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong in a bravura performance including singing, dance, video and writings. The films Ghosts Before Breakfast, Fall of the House of Usher and Entr’acte will be accompanied by the Counterpoise live band.
“Cassiopeia’s performance in ‘A Night with Joséphine’ announced her as a new star of
musical theatre…. She deserved her standing ovation!” Mark Eynon, Director, Newbury Spring Festival
