Kent, early 1984. The Thatcher government has just been re-elected in a
landslide victory. A new wave of British heavy metal music is in full swing.
There is increasing concern within the Church of England regarding the
influence of the devil in British society...
In a small Kent mining town, a group of friends start a rock band, much to
the disappointment of their families who have other ideas for their futures.
Clay, lead guitarist in the band, is pressured by his father Will into
accepting an apprenticeship at the Kent mines, but his only passion is music.
Davey, the charismatic lead vocalist, works in a garage. He and his sister
Chrissy try to support their recently-widowed father Tom. As the miners’ strike erupts, the band’s problems worsen. Their families are
driven into debt and torn apart by political differences.
Forced back to work, Tom is branded a ‘scab’ by the striking workforce.
A chance meeting with a bizarre character purporting to be a wealthy and
well-connected record producer seems to offer the band an opportunity
that’s too good to miss: an escape from strikes and family expectations.
Davey becomes romantically involved with Aisha, a local wealthy married woman. Aisha recognises the “producer” as an associate of her husband’s
and a regular at the village church. But is he all he claims to be?
As the band’s dreams of stardom crumble, along with the illusions of
working class solidarity, the families are forced to face the reality of what, and who, really matter to them.
After the screening, there will be an opportunity to have a Q&A session with the director, producer and co-writers, Kevin and Juliette Short.
Running time (including Q&A) 150 minutes - Film (122 minutes)
